Laguna Azul to Illon Traverse: Epic Views of Mount Tronador (3 Days)
This traverse is the definition of Patagonian contrast: it blends the adrenaline of a technical climb with the unparalleled reward of camping on one of the National Park’s few natural sandy beaches—all set against the backdrop of the colossal Mount Tronador. A compact trek that delivers an immense visual impact.
Day 1: Los Césares to the Awe-Inspiring Laguna Azul (Approx. 6 hours)
Our trek begins at Los Césares campground, situated on the shores of Lake Mascardi. Although we start on flat ground, this will be our day of greatest positive elevation gain, maintaining a constant uphill climb. We ascend first through dense native forest, later alternating with stunted vegetation and rocky riverbeds. The arrival at Laguna Azul, nestled within its granite amphitheater, is truly stunning and imposing. We will camp in the surroundings, soaking up the tranquility of the high mountains.
Day 2: From Technical Challenge to Tronador’s Beach (Approx. 6 hours)
The first two hours are the most demanding (physically, technically, and mentally). We face a steep scree field that requires concentration and a steady foothold. Once completed, we reach the ridge overlooking Laguna Azul (now far below), starting a highly enjoyable hike with incredible views. The final upward push brings us to the ridge of Cerro Capitán. From there, the path gradually descends through forests and meadows to our objective: Laguna Illon, famous for having one of the National Park’s few sandy beaches and a privileged view of Mount Tronador.
Day 3: The Doctor’s Viewpoint and Descent to Pampa Linda (Approx. 6 hours)
After breakfast, we take a “light” two-hour round trip hike to the “La Mirada del Doctor” (The Doctor’s Viewpoint), offering truly stunning vistas of Lake Frey and the Brazo Tristeza arm of Nahuel Huapi. From Laguna Illon, we begin our final descent to Pampa Linda, taking approximately 3 hours. Our transfer will be waiting there for the return, leaving you filled with the satisfaction and beauty of the traverse.
