The Frey to Jakob Traverse: Granite Spires and Glacier Lakes (3 Days)
This traverse condenses the very essence of high-mountain trekking in Bariloche, linking two of the region’s most iconic huts: Refugio Frey, famed for its granite climbing spires, and Refugio Jakob, set by a stunning glacial lake. It is a classic circuit offering dramatic views and the rewarding challenge of crossing a key mountain pass.
Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
Challenge level: Medium / High
Day 1: Catedral Base to the Mythical Frey Hut (Approx. 4 hours)
We start with a private transfer to the base of the Catedral Ski Center. The initial trail ascends gently through a lush native forest, crossing the tranquil Van Titter Stream. As we gain elevation, the vegetation thins to reveal the first majestic rock formations. The final stretch is a steep, constant climb, culminating at the foot of the imposing Frey Spire, next to Laguna Toncek and the Emilio Frey Hut (1,700 m.a.s.l.).
Day 2: The Pass Challenge and Catedral Ridge (Approx. 8 hours)
This is the most demanding and scenic day. We skirt Laguna Toncek to tackle the technical climb that leads us to the Catedral Ridge (2,000 m.a.s.l.), passing Laguna Schmoll. From this panoramic viewpoint, we descend into the Rucaco Valley. Next, we face the crucial ascent to Brecha Negra Pass, followed by a descent down a rocky slope that requires focus and careful footing. The arrival at Refugio Jakob, nestled in its glacial environment, is the ultimate reward. If the weather is warm, a revitalizing dip in the lagoon is the perfect way to celebrate the day’s achievement.
Day 3: Triumphant Descent to Bariloche (Approx. 5 hours)
After a breakfast with unforgettable views, we begin the return trek. The first part is a pronounced descent via the famous “El Caracol” section, leading us to the valley floor of the Casa de Piedra Stream. We traverse this beautiful valley, gradually descending until we reach the Tambo de Báez sector, where our high-mountain adventure officially concludes.
